FAQ

Why eat seaweed?

Seaweed provides a range of nutritional benefits, along with great taste. Our Wakame (Undaria pinatifida) seaweed contains high levels of calcium, iodine, thiamine, vitamin B12 and Omega-3 fatty acids. Additionally, our Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) contains over 70 vitamins, enzymes, minerals, trace elements and proteins. Macrocystis contains the highest concentrations of natural iodine of all the kelp species. Because the minerals and trace elements in seaweed are naturally balanced they are very easily absorbed by the body.

Where do you harvest your products?

All of our products are sustainably harvested from the pristine waters of southern New Zealand. Our Wakame seaweed is harvested from Stewart Island and Foveaux Strait whereas our Kelp is harvested from north of the Otago Harbour from free-floating rafts of the kelp that has been ripped from the seabed by natural wave action.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes we are happy to ship our products to our overseas customers! We have a variety of shipping options available.

How can I incorporate seaweed into my diet?

The easiest way to add seaweed to your diet is through the use of our seasonings range where you can sit them on the table in stead of your salt and pepper and sprinkle them on any/every dish. Our Wakame Fronds can be added to soups and stir-fries straight from the packet. Additionally our Recipe Blog aims to provide customers with delicious, and easy to prepare meals featuring Wakame seaweed and kelp to add to your everyday diet. Additionally, we would love our KiwiWakame fans to submit their favourite recipes for us to feature.

What is the difference between freeze-dried and air-dried seaweed?

All of our Wakame products are freeze-dried. They go through a process of sublimation to reduce moisture content below 0.005% which gives them an extremely long shelf life and allows the retention of 100% of the nutrients. This is the reason our products are much lighter than traditionally air-dried seaweed products. Air-dried seaweed generally has a moisture content of +/- 15%. Our Kelp products are air-dried.
